Eritrea concerned over US arms supplies to cornered government in
Mogadishu
Asmara, 27 June - Eritrea's Foreign Ministry voiced out concerns over
the US State Department's announcement it supply arms and ammunition to
the government in Somalia to boost its capability to break the siege
laid on it by the Al Shabaab militants.
The embattled transitional federal government, which had been proclaimed
in Djibouti earlier this year to rule Somalia, is a small tribal
coalition backed by Western powers and their allies in the region.
The government coalition, made up of secular politicians and some
break-away factions of the former Islamic Courts, is struggling to
maintain control over a few districts in the capital Mogadishu,
literally besieged by the Al Shabaab alliance of Somali militants.
Asmara expressed its fear that under the current conditions the decision
of the United States to supply arms to the Somali government holed up in
parts of Mogadishu, instead of helping to stabilize the situation in
Somalia, would only increase the obstacles on the way towards restoring
unity under the rule of law in the war-torn country at the Horn of
Africa.
