Ethiopian PM Meles holds discussion with French Military Chief of Staff
General Jean-Louis Georgelin
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on January 15, 2009 held discussion with French
Military Chief of Staff General Jean-Louis Georgelin on peace and security
affairs in the Horn of Africa.
General Georgelin underscored that his country will stand in support of
continental efforts made by Africans to solve their own problem and have
position with Ethiopia and the African Union (AU) in this regard.
During the discussion, Meles asked France to strengthen its contribution to
maintain peace and security in the region, especially in Somalia, through
its military forces based in Djibouti.
France has been significantly contributing in ensuring peace and security in
the region, Meles said. He called on France to play its role in fighting
against piracy along Gulf of Aden.
The two sides have agreed for exchange of information to jointly tackle
terrorism and piracy, according to a senior government official, who
attended the discussion.
General Georgelin told reporters that France lauds Ethiopia's effort to
ensure peace and security in the region.
He also affirmed his country's commitment and readiness to contribute in the
efforts to maintain regional peace and security.
