VSO is an international development organisation that works through
volunteers.
Working in Eritrea since independence, VSO is one of the main players in
support of the Ministry of Education in the country, VSO is also one of
the few INGOs currently working in Eritrea and as such enjoys a strong
relationship with the Ministry at all levels. The VSO programme has
recently undergone a strategic shift strengthening the extent of its
impact and this now requires consolidation at all levels. In addition,
there are exciting prospects for programme expansion.
VSO is now looking for an experienced Country Director to lead staff and
volunteers into this period of consolidation and growth. The role of the
Country Director is to provide overall leadership, strategic direction
and operational management in line with VSO’s vision and values. The
Country Director will also assume responsibility for the efficient
functioning of the Programme Office providing appropriate professional
and practical support to staff and volunteers. The post is also
responsible to maintain and further develop relevant relationships and
networks and to represent VSO to partners, the Government and other key
contacts.
This position provides an exciting opportunity for candidates with
substantial experience at senior management level in an overseas NGO
environment. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and
people’s management skills; will be an accomplished networker,
negotiator and communicator; will have sound judgment, excellent problem
solving skills and a flexible approach; will have the ability to
identify and analyse opportunities that contribute to strategic aims and
translate them into practical plans of action. Former experience in the
African context is essential as is proven experience of financial and
grants management. Knowledge of the region and previous experience of
working with volunteers are desirable.
The position is based in Asmara, with regular travel to programme sites.
Asmara is a well-organized, efficient small city, praised for its
peaceful environment; it is one of the cleanest cities of Africa. The
city offers international schools and many leisure opportunities
including restaurants, cinemas and sporting activities.
