February 2009 - The official opening ceremony of the 19th anniversary of
operation Fenkil was colorfully conducted today in Massawa City in the
presence of President Isaias Afwerki, Ministers, Army Commanders,
Ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, and thousands of nationals.
Speaking at the celebrations that was transmitted live by ERI-TV, President
Isaias pointed out that the anniversary of Operation Fenkil is an event that
reminds us to give due attention to the implementation of major development
programs at the national level, especially in Massawa and its environs, as
well as the country's coastline. The President further asserted that
vigorous endeavors would be exerted in Massawa and its environs as well as
along the entire coastline to strengthen the harnessing capacity of the
marine resources, promote tourism investment, expand and facilitate
transport services, provide reliable social service, including potable water
supply and electricity to the newly flourishing villages along the sea
coast. Above all, concerted action would be made to expand infrastructure
facilities in the two regions of the Red Sea in a manner that effectively
boosts agricultural output, he elaborated. (

speech she delivered on the occasion on behalf of the regional
administration, the Administrator of the Northern Red Sea region, Ms.
Tsegereda Woldegergis, pointed out that Operation Fenkil was historic as it
paved the way for the country's total liberation. She further underscored
that impressive achievements have been registered over the past 19 years
through rebuffing enemy acts of conspiracy and hostility. In this respect,
Ms. Tsegereda underlined that such achievements would lay solid ground in
ensuring Eritrea's bright future.
Likewise, Mr. Hamid Haj, head of PFDJ in the region, indicated on behalf of
the holidays coordinating committee that the heroic feats demonstrated in
Operation Fenkil is the outcome of the dedication and steadfastness acquired
in the course of the long armed struggle. He went on to say that this
historic event reminds us that the loft goal of national reconstruction and
development programs would be realized as long as unremitting endeavors are
made on the basis of internal capacity.
Also in the morning hours today, President Isaias, Mr. Abdella Jabir, Head
of Organizational affairs at the PFDJ, Defense Minister General Sebhat
Efrem, Ms. Luul Ghebreab, Chairperson of the NUEW, Ms. Tsegereda
Weldegergis, Administrator of the Northern Red Sea region, and Ms. Fana
Tesfamariam, Administrator of Massawa city, laid wreaths at the Martyrs
Statue.

President Isaias laid cornerstone in the construction of Cement and
Desalination Plant in Gedem.
The plant with the capacity of producing 350,000 tons of cement per year
would provide job opportunity for 3,300 nationals on permanent and temporary
basis.
A carnival show in which various national institutions took part staged in
the afternoon hours yesterday, while an exhibition highlighting the progress
of the Eritrean Naval Force featured today.
The carnivals along with the cultural troupe of the Northern Red Sea region
and student's parade won broad acclaim on the part of thousands of
spectators.
Moreover, different programs including sports competitions, poetry recitals,
arts exhibition and others were conducted.
