Accepting the pledge to defend the nation handed bequeathed from the generation of freedom fighters, the Eritrean youth challenged an invading force that threatened the nation's sovereignty and executed a historic and miraculous military feat at Egri-Mekhel ten years ago.
The objective of the massive TPLF army that launched an offensive through the central front of Mereb on 14 March 1999 was to overwhelm the EDF garrison at Egri-Mekhel with a huge number of troops and tanks, make their way into the plains of Hazemo and climb into Asmara through Dekemhare where they could execute their ultimate plan of destroying Eritrea as a nation. Yet, at the end of the fierce confrontation that went on for three days and nights non-stop, fields of Egri-Mekhel that saw the advent of 10 TPLF infantry companies flanked with additional mechanized unites became a mass grave of TPLF troops and their tanks.
As is generally known, the Eritrean people had been condemned to die many times and had the enemies succeeded in their condemnations, the Eritrean people would by now have wiped out from history. Yet, in view of the fact that there are brave patriots that would lay down their lives for their country, the Eritrean people persevered while their enemies marched to their graves one by one. And the battle of Egri-Mekhel is thus a historic event that further highlighted the Eritrean people's history of bravery and patriotism.
The nation belongs to all the generations that come one after the other and guaranteeing national security is the priority task and responsibility of all the generations. The Egri-Mekhel battle is thus historic event in which the present generation of Eritrean youth proved that they can effectively execute the pledge of defending their country against any aggression. Glory to the brave and patriotic young Eritreans!
