On December 31st, 2009 the Eritrean Community Center of Georgia (ECCGA)
hosted its first annual New Years Eve Celebration. Eritreans from the
Metro-Atlanta area as well as visitors from various parts of the country
brought in the new decade with music, dancing and laughter. ECCGA was
created in November of 2008 through the collaboration of various concerned
Eritrean Citizens in Georgia. The organization took shape after the
resurgence of an active youth movement in the city that grew in number and
following.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Yacob Adam, chairman of ECCGA wished all the
Eritreans at home and abroad a Happy New Years. Mr. Adam highlighted that
the goal of ECCGA is to foster brotherhood and camaraderie between the
growing Eritrean citizenry in Georgia. Mr. Adam further noted that it was
the organization’s goal to play a constructive role in helping the growing
youth in the area reconnect with their Eritrean heritage. Explaining that
the youth of this generation, often described as the “Post-Independence”
generation, holds the key to the future of Eritrea; it is imperative that
ample energy and resources be allotted in helping them become successful
individuals who are conscious of their identity.
Mr. Tekle Beyene, chair of Hizbawi Mekete of Georgia, also
briefly touched on the subject of UNSC Resolution 1907 that placed a
sanction on Eritrea. Describing the act, as illegal, unwarranted and above
all unjust, he explained the organization would do all in its power to reach
out to local congressional leaders and petition for the removal of the
sanction. He further stated that Hizbawi Mekete firmly stands with the
Eritrean People and fully supports the countries unyielding political
sovereignty. Mr. Beyene concluded the night by wishing all the attendants a
happy and prosperous year; as well as wishing a blessed and bountiful year
for Eritrea.
