PRESS STATEMENT:
SECURITY COUNCIL SANCTIONS ON ERITREA
On the 23rd of December 2009, the United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions on Eritrea for its alleged activities in Somalia and its “border conflict” with Djibouti. We are disappointed with the UNSC and reject the sanctions as unjust and baseless.
We stand by the Eritrean government and support its efforts to bring about a peaceful and sustainable solution for the crisis in Somalia. We also stand by the Eritrean people and government in rejecting the fabricated border dispute with Djibouti meant to demonize and isolate Eritrea in public opinion and in the international community.
Without question the Eritrean government has been a responsible and independent actor in the region basing its foreign policy on respect for sovereignty and the rule of law. The Eritrean people and the government have a history of respecting international laws and norms as evidenced by their decision in 1993 to initiate an internationally recognized and monitored referendum on Eritrea’s right to independence not because there was any doubt that Eritreans wanted an independent nation but because it would demonstrate that the struggle for independence was a legitimate expression of the Eritrean people to the international community. Again in 1998 Eritrea accepted and adhered to an International Court of Arbitration ruling that solved the matter of the Hanish Islands and it also accepted without preconditions in principle and in practice the final and binding decision of the Eritrea Ethiopia Boundary Commission.
Despite Eritrea’ s consistent track record of being a responsible state in the Horn of Africa, it has yet again become a target for the forces that control the International community and their attempt to pin the region’s problems on Eritrea and not on their own failed policies in the region. Eritrea and its people will never allow themselves to be victims of these forces and will continue to do what is right and just. The People’s Front for Democracy and Justice and the Young People’s Front for Democracy and Justice have full confidence in the Eritrean people and government to yet again prevail.
