External domination and internal collaborators with neo-colonialism exposing
Africa to backwardness and poverty: President Isaias

Asmara, 13 January 2010 - President Isaias Afwerki said that the two factors
exposing the resource-rich African continent to backwards, diseases, poverty
and dependency are external domination and dehumanization, as well as
handpicked internal collaborators with neo-colonial powers.

The President made the remarks in an interview he conducted with the
Belgium-based magazine, Solid'ere. Stating that it is quite distressing to
witness only the few exercising monopoly over resources through polarizing
societies while the majority are totally marginalized, he indicated that the
prevailing situation in Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and other countries could be
cited as a vivid example of such state of affairs. President Isaias further
pointed out that such a scenario is the outcome of the hegemonic and
adventurous unipolar order that surfaced following the end of the Cold War,
thus constituting an ugly phase that exposes humanity to danger in the
future.

Asserting that the end of the Cold War is not the end of the world, the
President underlined that in order for social justice to be ensured and
humanity prevail, the fundamental pillars of humanity need to be guaranteed.
He further stated that societies in various parts of the world have drawn
valuable experience over the past 20 years, and that the movements taking
place in many regions of the globe to bring about a change are the outcome
of the growing public awareness.

President Isaias elucidated that the Eritrean people's struggle for
independence goes beyond flag weaving. In this respect, he pointed out that
in the wake of the achievement of independence, Eritrea continued to strive
for promoting regional interests. He went on to explain that the cherished
vision of the Eritrean government is to improve the people's standard of
living and ensure social justice. In this regard, President Isaias pointed
out that solid groundwork has been laid for registering still more
gratifying achievements. It is also not surprising if hostile quarters level
allegations to demonize the nation and refer to us as 'bad apple' simply
because we reject becoming servants, and thus strive to ensure a bright
future to our people, including future generations, he elaborated. In this
connection, the President reiterated that the nation's lofty goal and vision
remain as ever ensuring the interest of the people.

Asked to comment on the mounting allegation that China is monopolizing
African resources, President Isaias stressed the need to analyze the issue
objectively rather than on emotional ground. He further stated that such
utterances represent an absurd standpoint that emanate from frustration on
the part of special interest groups keen to control Africa's resources. The
fostering of China-Africa partnership serves mutual interest, which is not
to the liking of the forces of hegemony, the President added.
