line with vigorous efforts being made to expand educational opportunities in
remote areas, a total of 67 schools were constructed last year at an
expenditure of over 10.5 million dollars.
At an assessment meeting it held from January 20 to 21, the Ministry of
Education disclosed that the newly constructed schools would provide
education opportunities to more than 8,000 students. There are also plans to
construct about 60 schools and 25 additional classrooms this year in
different parts of the country at a cost of over 21 million dollars.
The Minister of Education, Mr. Semere Russom, explained that the
student-centered curriculum would be pursued in an enhanced manner, which in
turn would reinforce efforts to nurture competent youths equipped with the
necessary knowledge and skill.
According to a report focusing on upgrading the curriculum and preparing
textbooks, 3 basic documents of national curriculum have been updated, and
that the textbooks used for instruction in all the national languages are
being streamlined. Concerted action is also underway to put in place the
requisite educational facilities, develop human capacity, strengthen the
teaching-learning process, introduce computerized educational system and the
like. It was also disclosed that 8 schools have opened for experimental
purposes in areas inhabited by nationals leading nomadic life.
The reports further elaborated that the Ministry is offering various
training courses both inside the country and abroad with a view to upgrading
the competence of teachers at all levels, besides organizing distance
learning programs.
Moreover, the meeting took note of the fact that effective soil and water
conservation activities, as well as forestation programs were carried out
through the Summer Work Program in which 300,000 students participated.
Various programs, including general knowledge contest, sports activities and
others would also be enhanced through the collaboration of the Ministry of
Information and other partners.
The envisaged action plan for 2010 was also outlined on the occasion on
which the participants conducted in-depth discussion.
