Asmara, 1 February 2010 - The Minister of Land, Water and Environment, Mr.
Tesfai Gebreselassie, stated that 70% of remote areas have now access to
potable water supply, which in turn is playing crucial role in promoting
public health and ensuring socio-economic development. And as such, the
tasks would be undertaken in an enhanced manner, he added.

Speaking at an inauguration ceremony of the potable water supply projects
designed to serve the inhabitants of 4 towns in the Southern region, the
Minister indicated that the implementation of the projects through the
collaboration of the Eritrean government and Japan attests the existing
relations between the two countries. The water projects inaugurated on
January 31 in Dubarwa are expected to provide potable water supply to the
residents of Dubarwa, Dekemhare, Mai-Dima and Adi-Keih towns.

Mr. Tesfai explained that the value of the project is assessed on the basis
of in its durability and proper handling of the facility. He further
pointed out that endeavors are underway to strengthen the cooperation of
partnership between Eritrea and Japan in the domains of agriculture,
fisheries, health, construction of roads and development of higher
education.

Mr. Shigeo Iwatani, non-resident Japanese Ambassador to Eritrea, expressed
his country's readiness to foster partnership of development programs with
Eritrea in view of the fact that Eritrea is corruption-free country.

The director general of Water Resource Department, Mr. Mebrahtu Eyasu,
indicated on his part that the newly implemented projects at an expenditure
of over 241 million Nakfa would provide potable water supply to more than
150,000 residents of 4 towns and 12 villages. He went on to say that the
task is in continuation of the vigorous efforts being made by the Government
towards ensuring the provision of potable water supply to both rural and
urban centers. In this respect, Mr. Mebrahtu highlighted the significance of
the projects in alleviating the burden of women in particular, which in turn
would help to promote active female participation in education.

The beneficiaries expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the
projects and stated that traveling long distance to fetch water and paying
high price for a barrel of water would be no more.

The projects include the digging of 35 wells, installation of 39 motors and
103km-long water pipelines, construction of 6 ponds and 29 water
distribution stations.
