rkshop.jpgAsmara, 11 April 2010 - A two-day national workshop on Arabic
language education in Eritrean schools that was held at Hotel Asmara Palace
under the theme: "Language: Asset of Centuries, Medium of Communication"
concluded yesterday adopting significant resolutions and recommendations.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Minister of Education, Mr. Semere
Russom pointed out that the Ministry is working vigorously to provide
equitable educational opportunities to all citizens. He also underscored
that the workshop was instrumental in devising best strategic policies on
Arabic language education in Eritrea and that strenuous efforts would be
exerted towards implementing the outlined plan.
Various study papers were presented at the workshop by experts and
intellectuals focusing on the historical background of Arabic language in
Eritrea, teaching-learning process of the language in the Eritrean schools,
the experience of some countries that teach Arabic as a second language,
challenges of teacher requirements and possible solutions, experience of the
Asmara Teacher Training Institute as regards Arabic program, the role of the
Arabic language in the daily life of Eritrean society, the role of the mass
media in the promotion of Arabic language teaching and learning, the
importance of the Arabic language as a means of communication in the region
and the like.
The papers highlighted that Arabic language education in Eritrea dates back
many years; however, it did not progress as desired due to colonial
policies. Indicating that the Eritrean government has been working
tirelessly for the development of Arabic language since the days of the
armed struggle, the papers underscored that encouraging outcome has been
scored thus far. In this connection, the workshop emphasized the need for
exerting coordinated endeavors on the part of all experts and institutions
towards realizing the set goal.
Following discussion on the presented study papers, the participants adopted
a number of resolutions and recommendations. Some of the recommendations
include; preparing competent Arabic language teaching-learning mechanism
based on the experience of other counties, outlining appropriate time of
starting teaching Arabic language based on research and upgrading the
capacity of manpower and facilities of Arabic language in the Department of
General Education as well as Asmara Teachers Training Center, among others.
The chairman of the workshop's coordinating committee, Mr. Saleh Mahmoud,
pointed out that in line with the strenuous endeavors being exerted to
develop student-centered teaching-learning process, the workshop is aimed at
devising means and strategies that will enable learners to master the Arabic
language and upgrade their competence to the desired level. It was also
important in identifying the main problems hindering effective
teaching-learning process and exploring the best practices of sound
pedagogic approaches regarding second language teaching, particularly the
Arabic language
