Twiga Stars rout Eritrea
By Doris Malyaga
The national women soccer team, Twiga Stars, put clueless Eritrea to the
sword after annihilating them 8-1 in their Africa Women Championship
qualifier played at Uhuru Stadium yesterday.
The resounding victory puts the local queens in a strong position of sailing
through to the first ever Africa Women Championship finals planned for South
Africa.
For the hapless visitors to progress, they will be required to win by nine
clear goals in the second leg tie scheduled for Asmara in two weeks.
Twiga’s speedy striker Mwanahamisi Omary was a thorn into Eritrea’s defence
after bagging four goals while her team-mate Asha Rashid scored a hat-trick.
Omary scored the opener barely six minutes after the kick-off before captain
Sophia Mwasikili doubled the lead in the 19th minute with an 18-metre drive.
The home side pressed hard to kill off the match early and Rashid added the
third goal after a frenetic 22 minutes.
Omary was on target for Twigas fourth goal in the 27th minute after dodging
goalie Bekit capitalising on Fatuma Khatib pass.
Rashidi netted in the fifth goal on the hour mark before Omary added the
sixth two minutes later.
Hundreds of fans who thronged the venue were treated to a one sided showdown
as the visitors offered no genuine opposition.
Rashidi scored the seventh goal in the 74th minute before Omary made it 8-0
in the 78th minute.
Barely a minute before the final whistle, Eritrea got their consolation
through Rahwa Solomon.
Twiga Stars saw off Ethiopia on a 4-2 goal aggregate in the first round to
book a date with Eritrea.
The local queens have only one hurdle to overcome before they reach the
first ever African Nations women finals to be hosted by South Africa.
The qualifiers’ second leg matches are billed for the weekend of June 4-6,
with the winners after both legs joining hosts South Africa for the finals
slated for October.
