On Sunday, December 19th, 2010 the Eritrean community of Dallas/Fort Worth
and the surrounding areas came together for the 3rd Hizbawi Mekete hosted by
Shimagle mekete in conjunction with PFDJ, YPFDJ, UEAF, and NUEW. The public
seminar was organized in continuation of the worldwide campaign to raise
awareness and inform the public of how to respond to the unjust and unfair
sanctions the UN Security Council placed on Eritrea.
The Mekete began with a moment of silence followed by an opening statement
reviewing the success of the recent Action Day event hosted earlier that
week, reaffirming the strength of the local community's outcry to the unfair
sanctions on Eritrea. Following that, the guest speaker, Dr. Bereket Feday
provided an in-depth analysis of the development within the Health Sector of
Eritrea and explained the importance of doing your own health screenings in
the Diaspora to ensure good periodontal health. The participants present
committed to writing letters and sending emails continuously to their
representatives. During the break, the local YPFDJ chapter organized some
entertainment by hosting a a bingo game with gift prizes for the winners.
Other participants that were unable to do so on action day, took the
opportunity to write and email letters to president Barack Obama and
Secretary-General ban Ki-moon.
Eritreans in Dallas/Fort Worth continue to realize the significance of their
role in ensuring these actions against their homeland do not hurt the
people of Eritrea, and they plan to do that by making their voices heard
right here in their local area!
