Eritrean Cyclist Natnael Berhane wins the sixth and final stage of Tour
Gabon "La Tropicale Amissa Bongo!"
Natnael Berhane, the youngest of the six Eritrean cyclists taking part in the
"La Tropicale Amissa Bongo" or Tour Gabon, won the final stage of the
competition on Sunday January 30th. He escaped a group of four and he sprinted
to the finish taking the quick step rider Jerome Pineau delighting his fellow
Africans. The citizens of Gabon were so proud of their fellow African that they
carried him to the podium. Natnael was unable to control his emotions and tears
of joy. This was the second time that an Eritrean cyclist came in first in this
tour that has six different stages. just two days ago the great Eritrean cyclist
and reigning African champion Daniel Teklehaimanot crossed the finish line
of stage 4. Today Natnael was accompanied by his fellow Eritreans Dawit Haile
and Frekalsi Debessai who came in 6th and 9th respectively.
This tour had professional cyclists from Africa, Europe and North America and
Eritrean cyclists have demonstrated that they are able to compete at the
professional level. The news release in the official web site of the tour was
titled "Today, the last stage of Amissa Bongo has led to an historic event for
African Cycling!" It is indeed an historic day and Eritrean riders, as an
Eritrean cyclist Yonatan put it on Eri-TV, are now looking up to the best in
the world and aspire to compete and win in the world's best stages!
EAAA congratulates the Eritrean cycling team for a job well done!
