Written By:PPS, Posted: Wed, Feb 23, 2011

President Mwai Kibaki Wednesday at State House, Nairobi received credentials from nine diplomats accredited to serve in the country from around the world.

President Kibaki received credentials from Ambassadors and High Commissioners from the Republic of Ghana, Algeria, Spain, Portugal, Ethiopia, the European Union (EU), Eritrea, Vietnam and Ireland.

Receiving credentials from the new Ghana High Commissioner H.E Kingsley Abdul Saka Karimu, President Kibaki noted that Kenya and Ghana continued to cooperate on international issues including supporting each other's candidatures to continental and world posts.

The president observed that the national Carrier, Kenya Airways which flies to Accra six times a week, could be utilized to promote economic and trade activities between the two countries.

On his part, the Ghanaian High Commissioner said his country and Kenya have over the years shared common perspectives of the continent and global issues.

Mr Karimu said Ghana continues to place a high premium on relations with African countries, more so with allies like Kenya whose role in the post-independence emancipation of the continent was legendary.

Presenting his credentials to President Kibaki, the new Head of EU Delegation, Ambassador Lodewijk Briet expressed the European Community's commitment and support to Kenya's reform Agenda whose notable progress was the promulgation of a new Constitution in August last year.

Mr. Briet, at the same time, commended Kenya for the invaluable contribution in the joint fight against piracy and looked forward to a closer working relationship to bring the much needed stability in Somalia.

Receiving the credentials, the President said the EU is Kenya's second largest development partner after the World Bank, accounting for about 15 per cent of the government's total budget.

President Kibaki said Kenya is benefitting from ksh. 15.4 billion Infrastructural developments funds emanating from the six financing agreements signed between Kenya and the EU in April last year.

The Head of State appreciated the EU support, extended under the ACP-EU framework, through the National and Regional indicative programmes.

The Algerian Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador Maandi Saad, while presenting his credentials, said Kenya and Algeria shared common views and common interests, working closely in the African Union and the United Nations to ensure peace and security prevailed in Africa while conflicts are resolved through peaceful means and negotiations.

Presenting his credentials, Ethiopian Ambassador Shemsudin Ahmed Robie observed that the exemplary peaceful coexistence and friendly neighborliness of the two countries, based on mutual respect and noninterference in each others' internal affairs should be strengthened through people-to-people relations.

Others who presented their credentials during the occasion were the Ambassador of Spain, Mr. Javier Herrera Garcia-Canturri, Dr. Alexandre Maria Lindim Vassalo of Portugal, Mr. Beyen Russom of Eritrea, Mr. Nguyen Duy Thien of Vietnam and Mr Lorcan Fullam of Ireland both resident in Dar-es-Salaam.

President Kibaki urged the envoys to sample the friendliness and generosity of Kenyans as well as to visit various renowned tourist-attraction sites in the country.

He called on the diplomats to strive to broaden and deepen the existing bilateral ties between Kenya and their countries to the highest levels possible.

In attendance was acting Foreign Affairs Minister Prof. George Saitoti among other senior government officials.
