Ethiopia
urges Eritrea to refrain from destructive strategy against it
March 18th, 2011

APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Ethiopia on Friday in Addis Ababa the capital
urged its neighbour Eritrea to refrain from destructive strategy against it,
saying that it will take all necessary measures to safeguard the country
unless the situation changes soon, APA learns on Friday.

The Ethiopian Foreign Affairs minister, Hailemariam Desalegn, said on a
state-owned Ethiopian Television (ETV) that Eritrea is currently involved in
activities in a bid to resort to destructive measures against Ethiopia.

“It-Eritrea- is working daily-24 hours- to take destructive action against
Ethiopia. We are asking the international community and the UN to play its
role,” said Desalegn.

He indicated that if all efforts by the international community fail to
stop Eritrea’s destructive action against Ethiopia, the latter will take the
necessary measures to safeguard the country.

Ethiopia however did not give details on the kind of destructive strategy
being planned by Eritrea.

It is the first time in years that Ethiopia makes such a strong statement
against Eritrea. The two countries, which went into war 10 years ago due to
a border dispute, are still in tense security situation as they are unable
to solve their border dispute despite the efforts by the international
community.

After the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission in collaboration with The
Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration issued a verdict in 2002 on the
border dispute, Ethiopia is calling for dialogue to implement the border
decision saying that there are some errors thus the need for dialogue.

It was established that Badme, the disputed territory at the heart of the
Eritrea-Ethiopia conflict, belonged to Eritrea.

According to Ethiopia, the border decision divided a house and family into
two, which can be solved through dialogue while Eritrea is asking for the
implementation of the decision.

Over 70,000 soldiers are reported to have been killed due to the border war
some ten years ago.

Observers are saying that the two countries are currently in “No war, No
peace” situation.

Eritrea and Ethiopia share 1000km border.
