FLAS for Summer 2012 – Univ. of Pennsylvania
The University of Pennsylvania African Studies
Center will award Foreign Language and Area Studies
(FLAS) Fellowships for Summer 2012 to undergraduate and graduate students engaged in
pursuing the study of the following African languages
Amharic, Igbo, Swahili, Tigrinya, Twi, Wolof, Yoruba and Zulu. The FLAS Fellowship pays tuition (up to $5,000) and provides a stipend of $2,500.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, be admitted to or enrolled in a full- time undergraduate or graduate program, and have research or career plans that require the use of an African language. The successful applicant must then enroll in a summer intensive program that is the equivalent of one year of language study. Students at all levels of language proficiency are encouraged to apply, but those with native fluency and undergraduate students wishing to enroll in beginning language classes will not be considered for the fellowship. Undergraduates must have declared a major by the time of application deadline to be considered.

The competition will be conducted strictly in accordance with University policies and the selection guidelines of the U.S. Department of Education's Title VI Program.
