Zeinasellassie runs 8:47.75 in 3,200 meters
Apr. 9, 2012
North Central's Futsum Zeinasellassie broke a 37-year-old Indiana high
school track record in the 3,200 meters late Saturday night.
The Eritrean-born senior won in 8 minutes, 47.75 seconds at Arcadia,
Calif., in an invitational meet that attracts athletes from across the
country.
Rudy Chapa, Hammond, set a state record by running an 8:51.0 two-mile
in 1975. That translates to 8:48.27 for the slightly shorter 3,200
meters.
Perhaps more impressive than the 8:47.75 were times for
Zeinasellassie's final 800 meters (1:59) and 400 meters (57 seconds).
He led 16 runners under the 9-minute mark. Bernie Montoya, a junior
from Yuma, Ariz., who surged ahead before the last lap, was overtaken
and finished second in 8:48.25.
