AFTER a good outing in the Tour of Morocco where the national cycling team finished 7th, Team Rwanda coach Jonathan Boyer has challenged the side to finish inside the top 5 in the Tour of Eritrea, slated for May 30-June 3.

“The terrain suits us well. It is hilly and the riders are natural climbers. So finishing in the top 5 is a realistic target for us,” Boyer said yesterday.

The Tour of Eritrea has eight stages and is a 2:2 UCI (International cycling union) classified race. The competition started in 1946 and was not held for a number of years.

Team Rwanda will face competition from the elite riders from Eritrea and Morocco as well as South African professional cycling team MTN Qhubeka.

Rwanda’s contingent includes six riders, Abraham Ruhumuriza, Nathan Byukusenge, Nicodem Habiyambere, Joseph Bizimurumreyi, Emmanuel Rudahunga and Hadi Janvier.

The delegation also includes a masseur – Obed Ruvogera, Media Officer Kimberly Coats and mechanic Darcel Maxime leave on Friday morning for Eritrea.

Habte Weldesimon has won the event the most times (3), while Meron Russom won last year’s event. It is the first time Rwanda is taking part in the competition.
