UIC seizes 2 army bases in Mogadishu
Wed, 02 Jul 2008 14:16:01
The Union of Islamic Courts fighters have captured two Somali military
bases in South Mogadishu, killing more than twelve soldiers.
Heavy clashes between UIC fighters and government troops erupted when
the fighters attacked Somali and Ethiopian forces based in the Black Sea
street, killing more than 12 soldiers and capturing eight others, Press
TV correspondent reported on Tuesday.
The fighters than headed towards the capital's south and captured two
army bases in Hodon and Howlwadag districts, without confronting any
resistance from the Ethiopian soldiers there.
The clashes, some of the most serious in months, came a week before a
deadline for the implementation of a truce agreement signed by rival
factions last month in Djibouti, was due to expire.
Elsewhere in South Mogadishu, clashes punctuated by machine-gun fire,
mortars and rocket-propelled grenades between Ugandan peacekeepers,
government forces and insurgents have left 16 civilians and 14 Somali
soldiers dead.
