Somalia- Islamists say government forces surrendering
Monday 4 August 2008, Mareeg Online
Al-Shabab has said almost 30 government soldiers who were recently
trained in Ethiopia have surrendered to their group.
According to Al-Shabab's spokesman, Sheikh Muqtar Robow Abu Mansur,
almost 25 members of the government forces who were recently trained in
Ethiopian surrendered to Al-Shabab.
Robow said Al-Shabab had to purchase the weapons from some of the
surrendered government forces after they requested for permission to
leave.
As Mareeg made contact with the police commander of Bay Region, Col Abdi
Ma'alin, he denied the claims by Al-Shabab that some government forces
have surrendered to them.
Claims of government forces surrendering to Al-Shabab come at a time
when there is a widening rift between top government officials in the
Transitional Federal Government of Somalia.
