Great Showing by Eritrean Athletes at the 10000m Olympics Competition

Three Eritrean runners, Zerisenay Tadesse, Teklemariam Medhin, and Kidane Tadesse, competed against the top 10000M runners in the world. Eritrean runners for the first time in history took early charge of the race. Teklemariam and Kidane set the pace by taking the early lead with Zerisenay directly behind them; Zerisenay then took the lead after about 2500Ms and was either leading or among the leaders throughout of the race. With Eritreans runners taking command of the race, the commentators were constantly naming Eritrea and giving Eritrea and its runners the recognition they deserved. This was great for the country as these athletes continue to solidify Eritrea’s position among the world’s greatest runners.

Zerisenay finished 5th with a time of 27:05:11; Kidane finished 12th with a time of 27:36:11; and Teklemariam came in at 32nd clocking in at 28:54:33. Zerisenay was within striking position at the end but came in one second after the bronze medalist. We congratulate our athletes for a great race.

Thank you Zerisenay, Teklemariam, and Kidane for continuing to represent Eritrea well. Eritrea’s future in this event is extremely bright as Zerisenay is only 26 years old while Teklemariam and Kidane are 20 and 21 years of age, respectively.

Teklemariam and Kidane were advised by the coaches and EAAA to take charge of the first 5000m and they did their best to set the pace during the first half of the game. Since their chance of medal was extremely narrow, leading the packs was their best chance to put Eritrea into the World Athletics map. Eritrea's name was at the top during this Olympic 10000m competition because of these three athletes. There is no doubt that these young runners will perform great in the coming years.
