"Gabre supports Rebel groups", Somali President

Wednesday 20 August 2008

Reports from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, say that interim Somali President
Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed has lodged a complaint against the commander of
Ethiopian troops in Somalia. President Yusuf is said to have handed to
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi an envelope containing a complaint
against Gen. Gebre Dilfa [last element untraced], whom he claimed had
ties to anti-government insurgents and that he sold arms to them.

President Yusuf also said that Gen. Gebre Dilfa had been receiving huge
bribes from major traders of Mogadishu's Bakaaraha market, with whom he
had struck a deal barring Ethiopian and interim Somali government troops
from entering the market and exempting them from paying taxes.

The president claimed traders and the general agreed instead that the
tax money be channeled to him.

The president also accused Gen. Gebre of siding with Prime Minster Nur
Adde, saying that the general and the prime minister established for
Bakara market a private security force independent of the interim Somali
government, in effect creating a no-go zone for the government.
Therefore, the president called for the replacement of Gen. Gebre as
commander of Ethiopian troops in Somalia.

It was unknown whether or not President Yusuf's complaint was accepted.
The president called on Ethiopian prime minister to replace Gen. Gebre
with a new commander, saying that there would be no stability in Somalia
as long as the general remained head of Ethiopian troops in Somalia.
