Egypt to return five unaccompanied Eritrean refugee children through UNCHR
APA-Cairo (Egypt) Egypt on Thursday agreed to return to Eritrea five
Eritrean refugee children who are presently at the regional office of the
United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Cairo when they were
recently brought to Egypt by a group of Eritreans who tried to enter the
country illegally.
A spokesman of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Hossam Zaki said this decision
by Egypt is a confirmation of its commitment to humanitarian considerations,
despite the violation by these refugees of the country's immigration laws,
Egypt was keen to find a lasting balance between national security
considerations and commitment to relevant international conventions
particularly the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the 1951 Refugee
Convention.
Hossam Zaki added that this is not the first time that Egypt has cooperated
with the UNHCR, which he said was reflected such cooperation in its recent
report in 2007 that praised the cooperation of the Egyptian authorities.
