Sep 17 2008 by Sara Nichol
THE Bupa Great North Run is the world¢s largest half- marathon. It starts in Newcastle and finishes in South Shields.
The
race was devised by former Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist and BBC
Sport commentator Brendan Foster. It was first staged on June 28, 1981.
Organised
by sports marketing agency Nova International, which was also
established by Mr Foster, the event began with 12,000 entrants.
That number has now risen to 50,000.
Athlete
Paula Radcliffe won the race in a world-best time for women in 2003,
completing the 13.1-mile course in 65 minutes and 40 seconds.
Zersenay Tadese, of Eritrea, holds the men¢s record time with 59 minutes and five seconds.
