Ethiopian troops to pull out of Somalia
Published: Sunday 26 October 2008
The government of Somalia has agreed a cease-fire with the Islamist
opposition and said that Ethiopian troops will start to leave the
country in November.
The
Ethiopian troops, who came to the Somali government's aid in its fight
with the Islamist militias in 2006, will start their withdrawal by
quitting the cities of Beledweyne and Mogadishu. They will complete the
withdrawal, a condition set by the rebels, next year.
This year
more than 10,000 people throughout the country have died in the
fighting between the government and the rebels. Last week, more than
40,000 people fled the capital Mogadishu. More than one million Somalis
currently live in refugee camps.
