ETHIOPIA
Donald Yamamoto is to leave Ethiopia in controversy
The United States Ambassador to Ethiopia, Donald Yamamoto, has always
given the impression in public that he was, like his predecessors in
this post, well disposed towards the EPRDF, the party in power in Addis
Ababa
. Admittedly, those who know him a little better are aware that he can
privately be a scathing critic of the Ethiopian authorities' repressive
practices (ION 1256). However, the professional diplomat that he is, he
would never express his opinion in public.
Now he has been plunged into the centre of a controversy in Addis Ababa,
just when he was packing his bags to go back to Washington to work under
the orders of the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs,
Johnnie Carson. Indeed, the Ethiopian authorities did not appreciate the
latest report from the American State Department on violation of human
rights in their country.
The Ethiopian foreign affairs ministry publicly stated that it held the
American embassy in Addis Ababa responsible for this bad report, since
it was the embassy's diplomats that noted the incriminated acts and
informed Washington of them. Bad luck for Yamamoto who up to now had
been so cautious with the Ethiopian government.
