Asmara, 30 July 2009 - President Isaias Afwerki today received and held
talks with Mr. Louis Michel, Member of the European Union Parliament.
In the meeting at the Denden Hall, the President congratulated Mr. Louis on
his election as a member of the EU Parliament. President Isaias pointed out
that countries in the Horn of Africa could achieve socio-economic
development only if they nurture an outlook free of narrow perceptions and
temporary advantages, in addition to mapping out action plans aimed at
securing mutual and regional benefits, as well as economic progress.
As regards the Somali issue, he underscored that the sole solution rests in
holding a comprehensive peaceful dialogue with the participation of all
Somali forces and regions, including Somaliland and Puntland, without any
external intervention. In this respect, the President particularly
emphasized the need for establishing a transitional Somali government that
is acceptable by the entire Somali people. President Isaias further
underlined that the futile attempts being made on the part of various forces
which do not ensure the participation of all would not only fail to bring
about any solution but on the contrary would ensue in human and material
losses.
Mr. Louis Michel on his part said that he shares similar views as that of
the President in different domains. He further asserted that he would work
diligently in improving socio-economic development of African, the Caribbean
and Pacific countries, as well as in promoting peace and security in the
Horn region.
