Int'l panel settles Eritrea-Ethiopia war claims

An international arbitration panel says it's awarding substantial sums
to Ethiopia and Eritrea for financial damages during their 1998-2000
border war, but cautions that both sides may be disappointed.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration says it will post the awards on its
Web site Tuesday.
It said Monday the amounts were likely to be much less than each side
believes it should receive.
Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a 30-year
guerrilla war, but their border was never demarcated. Tens of thousands
were killed in the two-year conflict.
The two countries agreed in 2000 that the arbitration panel should fix
the border and settle claims. But Ethiopia rejected a 2002 boundary
decision because it gave a key town to Eritrea.
