Africa wins 23 medals at Berlin world athletics championships
APA-Dakar (Senegal) Africa has done much better during the just ended
World Athletics Championships than during the world championships in
Osaka where it had won only 20 medals, eight gold, five silver and seven
bronze.
The African athletes won 23 medals at the end of the ninth and last day
of the Berlin world championships which came to an end on Sunday at the
Olympic stadium in Berlin.
It was four other medals which were added to the nineteen others won at
the end of Saturday's event.
Kenenissa Bekele dominated at the men's 5000 metres like the South
African Mbulaem Mulaudzi at 800m where he got ahead of the Kenyan Alfred
Yeggo.
At the women's marathon, the Ethiopian Aselefech Mergia obtains the
silver medal.
Kenya is on top of the four African countries with eleven medals (4 5 2)
in front of Ethiopia which totalizes eight medals.
These two countries are followed by South Africa which has three medals
and Eritrea which won one silver medal.
At the general ranking of the 32 countries which won medals, Kenya comes
in the third place behind the United States which won 22 medals and
Jamaica which had 13 medals.
Ethiopia, South Africa and Eritrea are respectively ranked seventh,
ninth and twenty-fourth.
