Noting that significance and objectives of the movement is to be viewed from
the standpoint of the economic, social and political aspects, President
Isaias explained that workers' productivity is affected by the level of
societal progress. He further pointed out that the stability and harmony in
a given country is a reflection of the prevailing political system, and that
the members of society cannot lead a secure and stable life as long as
social justice is not ensured. Hence, the struggle or organization of
workers is essentially aimed at guaranteeing a just and equitable allocation
of resources, the President elaborated. In this respect, he underscored that
the Eritrean workers movement focused on achieving this fundamental goal.
Highlighting the dynamic role workers play in the economic, social and
political life of society, President Isaias pointed out that the people's
standard of living and potentialities depends on workers' productivity. He
went on to stress that higher workers' productivity is the cornerstone of
development, and that the association of workers should strive to nurture a
workforce that is equipped with the necessary training and skill, as well as
commitment to raise production.
Furthermore, President Isaias called on the NCEW to map out a strategy for
the years ahead and foster cooperation and partnership with various
organizations and associations abroad.
Also speaking at the opening session of the conference, Mr. Tekeste Baire,
Secretary General of the NCEW, explained that the task of documenting the
30th anniversary of the establishment of the Eritrean workers association is
being undertaken with vigor so as to serve as a potent source of information
and heritage for future generations.
A number of papers focusing on the significance of documentation, historical
outline of Eritrean human resource and productivity before and after
independence, the history of Eritrean workers movement, the experience of
the NCEW in Europe and those of affiliate basic organizations in North
America and the Middle East, as well as strengthening the organizational
capacity of the Confederation and the challenges ahead, among others would
be presented at the conference which will continue until tomorrow.
