Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia
State Secretary Davor Božinovic received Eritrean Foreign Minister
PRESS RELEASE 311/09
Zagreb, 27 July 2009
State Secretary for Political Affairs Davor Božinovic received July 27th
2009 Eritrean Minister of Foreign Affairs Osman Saleh Mohammed, who had
visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration in
order to communicate to the Croatian side Eritrea's position on the
situation in Somalia.
State Secretary Božinovic first thanked for Eritrea's support for
Croatia's non-permanent UN Security Council membership.
The meeting pointed out that Somalia is one of the world's largest
crisis areas, and Croatia is concerned for the safety of its seamen
crossing the Aden Bay and falling victim to Somali pirates at an
increasing rate.
State Secretary Božinovic pointed out that Croatia support Somalia's
transitional government, adding that its successful dealing with the
crisis depends on the support by Eritrea and neighbouring countries in
the region.
A solution is already being jointly sought by numerous international
organizations, namely the UN, African Union, EU, and NATO, who is
patrolling the sea around Somalia, ensuring safe sailing. In that
regard, State Secretary Božinovic communicated Croatia's position that
Eritrea, as well as all other interested countries, should communicate
and cooperate more intensively with international organizations, so that
peace and stability can be achieved in Somalia and the Horn of Africa.
