Zanzibar's road in the Cecafa Under-17 tournament came to an end on
Thursday when they were hit 2-1 by Eritrea in a quarter-finals match
staged at the Wadmedani Stadium, Sudan.
The Zanzibari's who had reached this far by finishing second in the
Juba-based Group B found the going tough against the Group C runners-up
taking in the first goal in the 11th minute courtesy of Osman Mohamed.
They went in deeper trouble in the 55th minute when Kulu Berhane found
the target.
The consolation goal for the islanders came in the 42nd minute when
Yohanes Tilahune failed to co-ordinate well with his goalkeeper leaving
the ball to roll across the line.
Join Uganda
By qualifying, Zanzibar now join Uganda, 2-0 winners over Malawi and
Tanzania, 1-0 winners over Ethiopia in matches staged in Khartoum on
Wednesday night.
Tanzania and Uganda were due to clash in first semi final following
their victories in Thursday's quarter finals.
The match will be staged at the Khartoum Stadium from 5pm and promises
to all the ingredients of a tough encounter.
Tanzania confirmed their place after a hard fought 1-0 victory over
Ethiopia while Uganda ran down Malawi 2-0.
Both matches were shrouded in controversy with the venue unavailable for
them for some eight hours due to varying reasons.
Over-night rains
First it was unplayable following heaving over-night rains that hit
Khartoum. It took Cecafa officials and hired labour over six hours to
make sense out of the pitch.
When all seemed set for the Tanzania v Ethiopia match, the Sudan senior
national team stormed the pitch claiming the mandate to train there
ahead of their World Cup qualifier in Ghana next month.
Cecafa officials had to give in after host federation president Kamal
Shaddad, a veteran African football administrator ruled in favour of his
national team.
