Zagre Award: Impetus to Academic Excellence
For every citizen to become an equal beneficiary of the nation's
resources and employ his/her creativity in stepping up the national
development drive, achieving academic excellence is of vital
significance. In line with this standpoint, the Eritrean government has
been making substantial investment in not only providing equal access to
educational opportunities but also upgrading the quality of education.
As a result of such an investment, there exists growing number of
schools in the country at present ranging from pre-school to the
secondary level even in remote areas. The Government has also opened a
number of colleges that provide training in different areas of study.
In the contemporary world, one cannot hope to realize any meaningful
goal without education. The objective of the big investment made to
develop the education sector is ultimately that of achieving academic
excellence, which in turn would provide added impetus to the ongoing
national development endeavors through equipping citizens with quality
education. Parallel with this, the Zagre Prize is aimed at encouraging
students who demonstrated excellence in their academic pursuit so that
they may become role models for other students. Hence, through emulating
these outstanding students, the country's youths should strive to
acquire competitive skills. The role of teachers in guiding students to
strive for excellence is equally important. Low academic performance on
the part of students is usually associated with the lack of dedication
of teachers and parents. In this regard, the annual award of the Zagre
Prize represents a worthwhile.
