Geoffrey Kusuro and James Kibet combined to rule the World Mountain
Running Championship held in Italy over the weekend. Kusuro, who had a
disappointing outing at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin last
month, this time turned on the style to beat a strong field in Italy.
The 20-year-old youngster needed 54.51 minutes to win gold ahead of
Eritrean Azerya Weldemariameri. The Eritrean crossed the finishing line

Despite struggling to impress on the track in international events,
Kusuro is steadily becoming one of the best competitors in international
mountain running.
Two years ago, the Ugandan won junior gold at the World Mountain Running
Championship in Ovronnaz. His performance in Italy combined with
Kibet's bronze, earned Uganda a fourth-place finish in the senior men
team's category, just four points behind Turkey. Eritrea topped the team
standings with 24 points while hosts Italy finished second on 39.
Kusuro and Kibet will be hoping to transform their mountain running form
to the road racing season, which also got underway over the weekend with
the National Half Marathon Championships.
