President Isaias holds talks with Sudanese First Vice President and
President of South Sudan

Asmara 14 September, 2009: President Isaias Afwerki today received and held
talks with a high-level delegation of the Government of South Sudan and the
SPLM, headed by Mr. Salva Kiir Mayardit, First Vice President of the
Republic of Sudan, President of the South Sudan Government and Chairman of
the SPLM.
In the meeting at the Denden Hall here in the capital, the President
expressed his appreciation for the delegations’ acceptance of the
invitation extended by the Eritrean government to visit Eritrea and asserted
the Eritrean government’s firm and enduring pledge towards ensuring the
rights and aspirations of the people of South Sudan.
He further pointed out that at the present delicate juncture in which the
Sudan finds itself, the SPLM under the leadership of Mr. Salva Kiir Mayardit
is expected to play a leading role.
The senior Sudanese official on his part stated that Eritrea is one of the
close friends of the people of South Sudan and asserted the SPLM’s
readiness to strengthen relations with Eritrea, especially in exchanging
views on developments in the Sudan and boosting mutual cooperation.
Moreover, the delegation briefed President Isaias on the developments in
South Sudan and the country as a whole, as well as the SPLM’s stance
regarding various Sudanese issues including that of Darfur.
On arrival at the Asmara International Airport at midday today, the
high-level South Sudan government and SPLM delegation was welcomed by senior
Eritrean government and PFDJ officials, including Foreign Minister Osman
Saleh.
