Witnesses said that the soldiers had French insignias on their uniforms, but
the French denied that they had any troops in Somalia. Almost as soon as the
French denial came, American military officials confirmed that members of
the US Joint Special Operations Command, backed up by helicopters, had
landed near the tiny village of Barawe, in southern Somalia. The landing
came this morning (September 14).
Although the sources wouldn't officially give the reason for the invasion,
some of them said, anonymously that it was to kill Kenyan Saleh Ali Saleh
Nabhan. who they called a "top al-Qaeda leader", but some dispute whether he
is even in al-Qaeda. The FBI has been wanting to question him about the
bombing of a Somali owned hotel in Kenya in 2002. The sources say that
President Obama signed an "execute order" ten days ago, authorizing the
killing They also. reported that the forces think they have killed Nabhan,
and that they have his body.
The United States has a long history of military involvement in Somalia. In
1993, an American "peacekeeping" mission failed. In 2007, the United States
backed an Ethiopian invasion of Somalia. Recently, the Americans have been
selling arms to the government. Sources say that the majority of these arms
are sold as soon as the Somalis get them.
During the presidential campaign, Barack Obama said that he wanted "boots on
the ground" in Afghanistan, Somalia and Eritrea. Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton promised the government of Somalia that the US would help it defeat
the al-Shabaab insurgency, and said that we would take "unspecified action"
against Eritrea, because of Eritrea's "interference with the rights of the
Somali people.". She claimed that Eritrea wants to topple the Somali
government thereby giving al-Qaeda a base. Other State Department officials
say that our government will double the amount of arms sent to the Somali
government.
Despite the American support, the Somali government is losing to the
al-Shabaab insurgency.
Sources say that with 200,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is unlikely
that the US has enough left to attempt a long term occupation of Somalia.
