AU calls for sanctions against those responsible violence in Somalia
APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) The African Union (AU) Commission on Thursday
appealed for sanctions against parties in Somalia who are blamed for the
on-going violence in that country.
The appeal was made following Thursday’s terrorist attack carried out at the
headquarters of the African Union Mission In Somalia (AMISOM) in Mogadishu
where a number of AU troops were reported killed.
“The Chairperson of the Commission stresses the need for renewed efforts by
the region, Africa and the international community as a whole, to provide
increased support to the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia
and to AMISOM, to isolate and take effective sanctions against all the
spoilers, and to further the quest for peace and reconciliation in Somalia,”
said the AU.
However, the appeal for sanctions did not mention the name of any of the
parties involved, and the kind of sanctions that should be imposed on them.
Al Shabab has repeatedly claimed responsibility for all the terrorist
attacks against foreign troops in Somalia, including Thursday’s attack
against the AMISOM troops.
“The AU will continue its efforts to enhance AMISOM, in terms both of
strength and mandate, to enable it to respond more effectively to the
prevailing situation and to take appropriate actions against the criminal
and terrorist elements who have no regard whatsoever for the interest of
Somalia and for the value of human life,” said the AU.
“The Chairperson of the Commission presents his heartfelt condolences to the
families of the victims as well as to their national governments. He once
again expresses his appreciation and that of the AU as a whole to AMISOM
personnel for their courage and dedication.”
