Information: a compass for overall development

One common reference to the times we are in is Age of Information. It
suffices to mention that information plays a leading role in the
development of a nation, and acts as primary vanguard in the nation
building process. With time, the process of data collection,
communication and dissemination has been steadily improving. Scientific
and technological advancements registered have made the process of
communication reach its zenith more than any other time.In order to
understand the significance of information, one could possibly equate it
to the force of light; and being well-informed as someone who lives in
the light, as opposed to someone who lives in the dark.
The history of societies is an everlasting progress in the lines of
change. Human beings strive to satiate their material and spiritual
desire through hard work. And improvement always requires material
resources. One must have resources and ample opportunity to be able to
commit and eventually convert resources unto tangible gains.
However, it is also evident that work and toil precede results and
development. Gains can only be possibly made if one makes plans with a
full intention of practicing them into reality. Planning isn't also
easy. It needs to be conducted through diligence as well as high
dedication and be accompanied with research. Hence, as information or
being well-informed points one in the right direction, it wouldn't
therefore, be an understatement to state that information is a compass
that points one to the right direction in the lane of development.
Thereby, continually developing our capacity in information retrieval
and processing becomes a contributing factor in the nation building
process. The development of information infrastructures and boosting
research studies can stimulate our development drive through the
provision of correct and accessible data at the right time; help a great
deal and assist in planning; exploit resources for benefit and most of
all, can create a cumulative fueling effect and make a contribution in
the development process. In light of such a use and need, the Government
of Eritrea is on the process of introducing a central information system
and modern systems of information technology that will enable collect
and process data.
As it is known, the building of lean, clean, efficient and competent
government institutions has been for long the national objective. The
task of government institutions is also to formulate policies, ensure
control, and engage in research and development and human resources
development. However, building institutional capacity is not an easy
task.
However, as this is not an easy task and requires a long process, it is
a precondition to have an institute whose sole concern is information
provision. As such an institution capable of directing the development
drive by assisting in fulfilling and satisfying numerous needs through
information provision; it is expected to make an impact by fulfilling it
primary role.
