Asmara, 21 September 2009 - Thanks to the equitable expansion of health
service along with the putting in place of the necessary infrastructure
facilities and trained manpower, encouraging outcome has been registered in
reducing mother and child mortality rate and increasing citizen's life
expectancy, according to Dr. Mismay Gebrehiwet, Advisor in the Health
Ministry.

Indicating that impressive achievements have been scored over the past 18
years as regards expansion of efficient and well-equipped health
institutions nationwide, he pointed out that 13 new hospitals, 19 centers
and 112 health stations have been constructed in the post-independence
period, which in turn enabled the people to get easy access to health
service.

Dr. Mismay went on to explain that referral hospitals have been constructed
in Barentu, Mendefera, Ginda and Asssab at an expenditure of over 500
million Nakfa, while a national referral hospital, Orotta, has been
constructed in Asmara. There are also plans to construct a regional referral
hospital in Keren town, he added.

Noting that at present there are about 358 government and private health
institutions in the country, he underscored that concerted action is being
taken to train competent human capacity, and thus attain the set goal. Dr.
Mismay elaborated that 60% of the required medicines are being produced
inside the country, and that other significant and needed drugs are being
provided to the public at a fair price. The achievements registered in
controlling diseases fully attest to the outcome of such vigorous efforts,
he emphasized.

In this respect, Dr. Mismay pointed out that Eritrea is being cited as
exemplary in the world for its impressive achievements in eradicating polio
and controlling malaria. Moreover, he outlined that mother and child
mortality rate has dramatically dropped and that the campaign being
undertaken to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS is bearing encouraging outcome.
