On May 30th, 2010- Y.P.F.D.J.-Toronto hosted its first Eritrean history and
political consciousness seminar for Hidri-Youth (19 years of age and
under). The seminar included an extensive valuable perspective of relevant
historical events with a sharp focus on Eritrea.
In this lesson, participants were introduced to a highlight of Eritrea’s
ancient history as well as a recollection of important contemporary
historical concepts- such as the colonization period, federation/annexation,
liberation struggle- to a consideration on the impact of the current border
dispute with Ethiopia as well as the importance of Eritrean Youths'
participation in different initiatives i.e. (YPFDJ, E-SMART campaign,
community leadership etc). The program concluded with a question/discussion
session conducted by YPFDJ board members who expanded on key concepts that
needed further elucidation.
Living in an age where younger generations are becoming more and more
disenfranchised, where their abilities of entertaining democratic ideas of
making a world more just or lead a life as a decent and compassionate person
are easily lost or overlooked, YPFDJ-Toronto, in accordance to its mission
statement, underscores the importance of reviving as well as maintaining a
connection with one's own history.
This program has been facilitated by the committee for Political Affairs and
Research in the effort to provide Eritrean Youth with the quintessential
knowledge and necessary consciousness to persevere and prevail in today's
world.
The eagerness showed by participants to learn about their history can only
but attest the need of holding more of this type of event in the near
future.
YPFDJ-Toronto is pleased with the outstanding outcome of the seminar and
invites anyone interested in participating to future events to contact the
organizing committee directly at YPFDJTORONTO@GMAIL.COM
