A store clerk was shot and killed Saturday afternoon at a Tuckaseegee Road
business during what police believe was a robbery.
Jamal Salih, 46, was shot after 1p.m. at the Business Center, an Internet
sweepstakes center that also serves as a place to use the Internet and make
copies. He was transported to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was
pronounced dead.
Police say a man with a black cloth over his face entered the business and
demanded money from Salih while customers were inside. The man and Salih got
into an altercation, according to police. Salih was shot, and the robber ran
away.
Friends gathered at Salih's home in the Northwoods neighborhood off Mount
Holly-Huntersville Road in northwest Charlotte. Friends said Salih was
originally from Eritrea and had lived in Charlotte for 20 years. They said
he is survived by a wife and three children, the youngest of whom is 7
months old.
Many of the friends who mourned were cab drivers. They said Salih had been a
taxi driver for a number of years but had recently left the business. They
said he planned to return to driving soon.
"He is a gentleman," said friend Yasin Mohamed. "Look at all the people
coming to the house."
The killing occurred in the 2700 block of Tuckaseegee Road, along a strip of
businesses that act as a small downtown for the neighborhood. Police were
interviewing nearby residents Saturday afternoon who might have seen the
shooter flee.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS
and speak directly to a homicide detective. In addition, people may call
Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
