Kenya, Eritrea in Cecafa semis

Kenya and Eritrea won against Tanzania and Somalia respectively to
grab the two semi final slots from Group A of the Cecafa Under-20
football tournament on Saturday.
The group matches end on Monday when Tanzania plays Sudan and Eritrea
play Kenya to determine classification. Group B is already over with
Uganda and Rwanda having qualified for the semis.
The Kenya v Tanzania match was explosive with the Kenyan boys proving
much superior but some moments of madness on their part exposed
tactical and general indiscipline which Tanzania threatened to
capitalise on.
Kenya raced to a 2-0 half time lead but were reduced to 10 men early
in the second period when an already booked Mahakama FC defender
Charles Odette Bala made another rush tackle and was ejected.
Midfielder Raphael Muigai was lucky to stay on the pitch, earning only
a yellow card for charging at and shoving the referee while protesting
Odette’s sending off.
Skipper Innocent Mutiso, the Mathare United winger, however calmed the
nerves of his team by scoring a superb goal to stretch their lead to
3-0. Mutiso collected the ball from a Muigai pass just after the
halfway line, gloriously raced through defenders on the left flank up
to finally face Tanzania goalkeeper Ally Saleh who he beat with a low
shot.
Mutiso’s Mathare teammate Jacob Keli had given Kenya a flying start in
the 13th minute, converting a cross from Mutiso himself.
Keli missed from a similar position in the 20th minute before Paul
Were scored another beauty of a goal from a forceful individual run.
The Tusker forward, who was re-instated to the team only on Thursday
after disciplinary sanctions, gained possession also from the centre
and dribbled through defenders on the right flank to finally walk past
‘keeper Saleh in the 27the minute.
But when Tanzania attacked, the Kenyan defence looked poor tactically.
Matters got worse when their confident ‘keeper, Caleb Adola aggravated
an existing knee injury to come off in the 32nd minute.
Untested Musa Hamisi Mohammed, of non-Kenya Premier League side Congo
United of Mombasa, took to between the posts looking every inch a man
who did not expect to be called into action in this tournament let
alone so early in the match.
The young rookie looked all at sea. Anthony Akumu, the confident Gor
Mahia defender had to scramble the ball from the Kenyan line after
Mohammed failed to cut off a high cross past the face of goal which a
Tanzanian strike knocked down for an almost sure goal.
However, to his credit, and after plenty of loud cajoling from the
coach Ombiji from the touchline, Mohammed grew in confidence and
indeed saved from quite a few threats. But one got away when he
punched the ball back into play and Mbwana Ally scored Tanzania’s
consolation goal in the 83rd minute.

Eritrea Somalia
While the Somali played a much improve game, they found scoring the
biggest problem in this match played at the National Stadium, Asmara.
Eritrea went ahead in the 63rd minute through Tesafalem Tekele while
Abraham Tendros made it 2-0 in the 77th minute.
Somalia pulled one back in the 88th minute through Badri Moalin’s penalty.
With these results, Kenya lead Group A with seven points, better goals
aggregate than second placed Eritrea.
Sudan, Somalia and Tanzania who are destined for an early departure
have three, two and one point respectively.
Somalia coach ismail Mohamed said he was impressed by his team’s
outing in Asmara and that he was confident the future of Somalia
football was bright.
“We played well in this tournament, even as we lost 0-6 to Kenya and
we deserve better results in some of the matches,” he said.
Eritrea coach Negash Teklit was happy with the win but noted that he
has a lot of work on finishing.
“Many of these players lack experience and that is why they miss a lot
of scoring opportunities,” he told the post match press conference.
“I don’t care who, between Kenya and Uganda I meet in the semis. My
target is to make the final,” he added.
