Al Tahir: Sudan to Discuss South Sudan-Uganda Open common Border in Djibouti
Meetings
Khartoum, Mona Albashir

Sunday, August 29th 2010

Parliament Speaker Ahmed Ibrahim Altahir, reported new details about
delivery of advance arms to South Sudan across the Ugandan lands.

He said, " We knew the types of arms, quantities and the fact that they had
been carried to the South by international organizations under African
camouflage," excluding implication of Uganda government in the issue saying
that the operation was illegal and covert.

Al Tahir stressed Uganda's pledges to support unity of the Sudan, noting
that the conference had discussed the referendum, unity and secession
issues.

In another development, the Speaker accused Uganda of supporting South Sudan
secession, reporting Uganda's ambitions in South Sudan and its moves to
annex the South for resolving the population pressure it faces.

On the heels of his return from Nairobi, where he participated in the
meeting of Executive Council of the Parliaments of the IGAD member
states, Al Tahir addressed a press conference at the Parliament last
Thursday. There and then, he said Uganda had capitalized on the awkward
situation in South Sudan, particularly in the commercial field, where
Ugandan goods enter the region indiscriminately in the absence of border
control or bilateral dealing. He added that the common border between
Uganda and South Sudan remained open, expecting that the matter will be
discussed in Djibouti upcoming meetings.

Moreover, he reported that he had briefed the meetings on the current
Sudanese political issues, with the referendum in the lead, calling on the
countries in the proximity of Sudan to support the option of unity of Sudan.

Meanwhile, the Speaker blamed the Referendum Commission, reiterating the
stance of the National Congress Party regarding the importance of
South-North Sudan border demarcation before the self-determination
plebiscite set for January,2011. He added that the referendum could not be
conducted vaguely, rather, border must be delineated.

The Speaker dismissed receipt of a proposal from the commission regarding
the extension of the referendum timetables, saying that the commission
cannot make such a proposal while it did commence its task.

It is worth mentioning that Al Tahir led the Sudanese Parliamentary
delegation to the said IGAD meetings in Nairobi for preparation for the
parliamentary conference the IGAD member states set for the end of the year
in Djibouti.
