Samsung and LG are expanding operations in Africa, with each aiming to
dominate the mobile phone handsets and electronics markets.
Samsung has launched operations across East Africa and Zambia through
partnerships with local companies, claiming the company has a positive
outlook of the business environment in the region. LG has also
launched a similar expansion program and partnerships in the region
where its phones and laptops will be supplied.
LG was the first to expand in Zambia and other countries in the region
last year, but its handsets are seen by some as too expensive. LG
regional CEO for Middle East and Africa Ki Wan Kim said the company is
determined to increase its presence in a bid to capture the market.
Competition between the two big electronics companies is expected to
bring down the cost of electronics products, including handsets that
could handle data, voice and multimedia services.
"I don't mind any of the competition coming in because I'm confident
we can beat them," Ki said.
LG is also planning to establish a mobile phone assembly plant in
Kenya at a cost of about US$1.5 million. LG is further expected to
export the assembled handsets to other countries in the region
including bigger economies like South Africa and Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Samsung claims it has made headway in capturing the African
market and is setting up a fifth electronics assembly plant in
Ethiopia in addition to plants in South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria and
Sudan.
