Africans dominate senior men in World Mountain Running Championships

Eritrean athletes dominated the senior men’s race at the World
Mountain Running championships in Kamnik, Slovenia. Samson Gashazghi
(ERI) won by three seconds from the 2009 silver medallist Azerya
Weldemariam (ERI). The two athletes ran 56 minutes over the 12
kilometres course which had an ascent of 1,295 metres. Eritrea also
provided 4th, 6th, 9th and 12th for a convincing team victory.
Ugandan athletes placed 3rd (Geoffrey Kursuro), 5th and 14th but lost
out the battle for silver medals to the USA and bronze to Italy. The
Irish Senior men placed 15th out of 24 teams with Brian MacMahon
(Clonliffe) first finisher in 38th. With three kilometres to go he was
running in 29th but a train of athletes were in tow behind him. Barry
Minnock (Rathfarnham) climbed well for 75th place.
The Irish Senior women team placed highest finishing in 11th place
with Karen Alexander (Sperrin Harriers) in 39th and Sharon Bird (North
Belfast) close behind in 46th. Italy won the team honours from
Switzerland and Russia.
The Irish Junior women finished 14th behind the winners Turkey,
Romania and Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Niamh Denny (DSD) was
top finisher in 29th after battling throughout against 32nd placed
finisher Catherina Mullen (Shercock). Yasemin Can (TUR) won
convincingly from her teammate Burcu Dag. The Irish Junior men placed
16th team and were led home by Emmet Jennings (DSD) in 47th position.
The Eritrean Yossief Andemichael won by an incredible three and a half
minutes from Ridvan Bozkurt (TUR).
