Nigerians mark independence anniversary
Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation-Qatar chapter (NIDO-Qatar) on Saturday celebrated at the Doha Marriot their country's golden jubilee independence anniversary amidst pomp and pageantry.
?
The event, held to mark Nigeria's independence from British rule on October 1, 1960, was attended by Nigeria's concurrent ambassador to Qatar and the Emirates Bashir Yuguda and a number of dignitaries.
?
Speaking on the occasion, Yuguda commended Nigerians resident in Qatar for their unity, which was the spirit keeping Nigeria together despite its 150mn population, 250 ethnic groups and 4,000 dialects.
?
The envoy said he was happy for the good conducts of Nigerians in Qatar without a sitting ambassador over the years, adding that he hoped Qatar would have its own consular by next year.
?
"Though Nigeria has gone through difficult times during the civil war and military governments, the country was moving forward as a leading economic and political nation in Africa," Yuguda said.
?
He added that as a regional power in Africa, the country was faced with many responsibilities, saying: "The challenges of regional power come with heavy burden. We are proud to say that with active support of Nigerians in international community, Nigeria is living up to expectations in maintaining law and order in Africa as well as contributing to the United Nations peace-keeping missions across the globe."
?
In a welcome address, NIDO-Qatar president OJ Millar said the year's independence celebration was special to Qatar residents because it was the first to be witnessed by a Nigerian ambassador to Qatar.
?
Highlights of the occasion were an array of cultural displays by Otu Ofuobi women, Egbe Omo O'Odua, Edo/Benin and Oghene groups and a special poem recitation (Ewi) by Yemi Emiola.
?
Apart from special performances by Nigerian artistes Mina Ochoche, who serenaded the guests with a special track from her album titled "Let Us Pray for Nigeria" and a Nigerian R&B singer Mima Ikyor, other activities for the night included musical entertainment by "identity sisters" and a solo Hausa musical rendition by Rakiya Lawler.
?
The newly elected executive members of NIDO-Qatar were formally inaugurated by the ambassador during the event, which was supported by Qatar Airways and Doha Marriott.
?
Present at the event were ambassadors of South African, Egypt, Senegal, Sudan, Eritrea and Japan.
