Serious action needs to be taken to maintain the neatness of Asmara city,
Say residents
Asmara, 12 October 2010 - Members of the public stressed the need for taking
serious action towards maintaining the neatness and charm of Asmara which is
among the few neat cities in the African continent.
They stated that although different corners of the city are characterized
with praiseworthy neatness that contributed to ensuring public health, the
lack of sanitation being witnessed recently in some areas due to lack of
garbage depot and negligence needs to be urgently addressed.
They further explained that failure to remove garbage depot after being
filled is compelling individuals to dump rubbish in the surrounding area,
thus aggravating the scenario.
In a reply he gave to ERINA regarding the issue, the head of the Asmara
Sanitation Department, Mr. Michael Beyene, indicated that such problem
emanates from lack of enough number of rubbish depot. He further explained
that the number of garbage depot has decreased from 250 in the previous
years to 150 at present, which decline is mainly caused by negligence on the
part of the public to make good use of the facility.
Mr. Michael further pointed out that the necessary step would be taken to
tackle the problem and called on the public to back up sanitation
activities.
