Tadese favoured for Portsmouth victory

By Steven Mills, October 19th 2010

World half-marathon record-holder Zersenay Tadese from Eritrea will be looking to bounce back after silver at the World Half-Marathon Championships

ZERSENAY TADESE from Eritrea will be looking to return to winning ways after relinquishing his dominance at the World Half-Marathon Championships in Nanning.

The Eritrean was attempting to claim his fifth successive world half-marathon title but the world record-holder was forced to settle for the silver medal behind Wilson Kiprop from Kenya.

Despite this loss, Tadese is still favoured to claim the title in Portsmouth and if the world 10,000m silver medallist, who likes to run aggressively, is in the mood, the course record of 45:56 could be in danger.

Victory is by no means assured as Tadese goes head-to-head with world cross-country champion Joseph Ebuya from Kenya, who is a late addition to the elite field. Ebuya hasn't contested a ten-mile road-race although his 10km PB of 27:33 augurs well for a strong showing.

Vincent Yator, who finished second at the African Championships and fourth at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, is another of the favourites.

Viktor Rothlin made a triumphant return from a career-threatening illness to win the marathon at the European Championships and the Swiss record-holder will be looking to sharpen up before next month's New York Marathon.

European 10,000m bronze medallist Daniele Meucci from Italy and multiple Austrian record-holder Gunther Weidlinger from Austria are also prominent participants in the elite field.

Reigning champion Mo Farah isn't returning to defend his title although the late inclusion of Andrew Lemoncello should bolster the British presence in the men's race.

Lemoncello was denied a visa for last week's World Half-Marathon Championships in Nanning, which means the Scot has been forced to alter his racing schedule as he gears up for December's Fukuoka Marathon.

The Great South Run will be televised live on Five from 10.30am until noon on Sunday.
