Today Eritreans in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area held third
round Hizbawi Mekhete seminar that calls for the repeal the Unjust
and Unfair sanctions imposed on the people and government of Eritrea
by the United Nations Security Council Coerced by the US government.

The program started with Ms. Meskerem Mehary, a young Eritrean-
American who took part in the 4th SAWA Youth Festival and had also
volunteered with the NUEYS in Asmara reporting on her impression and
admiration of the Eritrean work-ethic and how much it had helped her
to remain focus to attain her goals.

H.E. Ghirmai Gherbremariam, Eritrean Ambassador to the US who was
invited by task force briefed the attendees on current affairs in
Eritrea and the Horn of Africa. Ambassador Ghirmai also extensively
addressed Eritrea’s investment potential. He said the massive
investment potential is attracting substantial number of foreign
investors and encouraged Eritreans to take part in this extraordinary
opportunity. He said some of Eritrea’s promising investment sectors
include Agriculture and Fisheries, Tourism Development and Energy and
Mining.

Mrs. Freweini Tekeste, chairperson of the National Mekhete Task Force
gave the task force’s progress report of the last 5 months and
outlined its future plans. Mrs. Tekeste said thousands of Eritreans
have continued writing letters to President Barack H. Obama and their
congressional representative asking them to help repeal the unjust UN
sanctions.

One method of defeating these sanctions is to accomplish Eritrea’s
long-term vision of producing an economically, socially, politically
and culturally developed society. To that end, Dr. Bereket Feday and
Professor Ghidewon Abay-Asmerom who recently returned from Eritrea
presented a development report on Eritrea’s Health and Education
sectors respectively.

Dr. Bereket who started the first part of his presentation by using
an apt quote said he read on one of Sawa’s blackboards when he
visited it for the 4th Youth Festival, ‘Kabti Zeyedeqs: nktdqs
aytdeqs’, roughly translated it means “What keeps one from sleep is,
in order to sleep you shouldn’t sleep”, showed how the government of
Eritrea, through its progressive policy of social justice, and at a
cost of millions of dollars, is successfully improving the health
services in Eritrea. He also showed how far Eritrea’s health services
have improved since independence by noting that 5 Referral hospitals,
51 Health Centers, 182 Health Stations and 130 AIDS testing and
education Centers have been built in the last few years. Dr. Bereket
also showed that Eritrea has reduced child mortality and maternity
death to below the levels of most sub-Saharan countries. His report
also outlined how Eritrea is on the verge of totally eradicating
malaria, a killer disease that has been afflicting many tropical
countries. With these Dr. Bereket said that Eritrea is progressing
well to meet and surpass the targets of the Millennium Development
Goals related to health Services.

In an enlightening second part of his presentation, Dr. Bereket
showed his audience how bacteria in the mouth could lead to gum
disease, and if left untreated, can cause severe periodontal disease,
not only causing the loss of teeth, but could also be additional
factors to other serious complications like heart-attack and stroke.

Dr. Ghidewon on his part reported how Eritrea, taking access/equity,
relevance, quality & sustainability as the corner of its educational
policy, is doing in providing educational services to its citizens.
Dr. Ghidewon, quoting Ministry of Education, National Board of Higher
Education and other sources, showed how student enrollment, number of
teachers, schools and female participation in education has grown by
several folds. He also showed, how young and self reliant Eritrea,
by mainly relying on its own resources, is doing significantly well
in comparison to countries in the Horn of Africa region that are
receiving relatively more funds from outside donors.

The seminar ended with a renewed commitment to fight and repeal these
UNjust sanctions.

The seminar was moderated by two members of YPFDJ-DC, Ms. Tirhas
Kubrzghi & Mekonen G. Mariam.

Victory to the Masses!!
